Nelson Newcombe, 44, born England, residing Ayr. Father Robt. Newcombe. Mother's name not given. Sarah J. Haught, 38, born United States, residing Ayr. Parents James Newcombe and Ann Wilson. Witness Thos. Luxford of Paris. On Jan'y 14, 1859. The above registration has problems. The brides surname at the time of her marriage may have been rather closer to Haugh. There is a John Haugh, age 5, in the Newcombe household as of the 1861 census, probably a son of Sarah's by a previous marriage. Also, her father's surname is shown as Newcombe, which is entirely possible, but could also be a clerical error. |
| Note | The marriage registration of Nelson and Sarah would have her maiden name as Newcombe, which is possible, though this could also be a clerical error. She was evidently previously married. Her surname as Haught, as it appears in the registration, is rather ill written. With her and Nelson in their household in the 1861 census is a five year old John Haugh, evidently her son by her first marriage. After the 1861 census, Sarah and son John have yet to be found. The 1861 census does make evident that Sarah and Nelson had a daughter Esther Newcombe, apparently born in 1860. |
