NoteA rather unsatisfactory death registration for Barbara Newcombe has been found, though at first glance it must be thought to be for a child.

It reads as follows:

Death reg. 021059-82 Parkdale, York Co.
Barbara Newcombe died 01 Decr. Female. Duration of illness 6 years. Physician A. M. Lynd, M.D. Informant A. M. Lynd, Parkdale. Date filed Decr. 9, 1882.

There is no problem with imaging. The registration reads the same whether the image is presented by Familysearch or by Ancestry. Barbara's age is not presented at all. (Indexing appears to take Barbara's duration of illness as her age.)

The date of Barbara's passing, we must believe to be correct, for the Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society presents a transcription of Kinzie-Biehn Cemetery. This cemetery is located adjacent to the Doon Presbyterian Cemetery at what was once Doon, Ontario, but is now within the city limits of Kitchener. Barbara is buried beside her parents, Nelson Newcombe and Franey Kinsey. Barbara's date of death as it appears on her gravestone is said to be December 1, 1882, and her age is shown as 25.

It is entirely reasonable to believe that Barbara finished up in Parkdale, for she appears in the 1881 census in the Home for Incurables in Parkdale. The census information shows her to be age 22. There may not have been a clear grasp in the records of her exact age.

A Parkdale Register dated 1881 identifies A. M. Lynd, Barbara's physician in the above death registration, as a coroner for the County of York. There is also a brief biography for Adam Lynd on page 26 of this register and which tells us little except that he has a 'wide range of practice' in Parkdale and vicinity.

If indeed this is Barbara's death registration, and it's difficult to believe otherwise - it just isn't reasonable that there was not a death registration for the passing of an 'inmate' of the home - then the registration lacks information regarding her cause of death. She was in what was almost certainly the southern portion of Waterloo Township as of the 1871 census. Ancestry's indexing places her in Galt at the time of this census, but, looking over the names on the pages, it's a reasonable certainty that this is not correct. She was surely living in a part of Waterloo Township that was close to the village of Doon.

Whatever the unhappy health situation that afflicted Barbara - TB might be a good guess - then it occured between the 1871 and 1881 censuses.

One final comment. The death registration does not state where Barbara was born. Best guess is that she was born in North Dumfries. Her sister Elizabeth was born about a year or so before Barbara and Elizabeth's marriage registration places her birth at Ayr. This almost certainly was not in Ayr, but rather near Ayr, at the Blackhorse Corners where her father's tavern and inn was located. This is probably where Barbara was born as well. It is possible that a record exists with a more thorough biography of her background. If it is in fact medical, it may not be publically available.
