Alfred Newcombe

ID # 8745, (1845-)
FatherNelson Newcombe (1812-1865)
MotherVeronica (Franey) Kinsey (1825-1857)
BirthAlfred Newcombe was born in 1845.
NoteAlfred Newcombe is the oldest child shown to be with his parents as of the 1851 census. This census was begun on 12 January, 1852, and the age question was: How old are you as of your next birthday. We must believe that Alfred's stated age, 7, would have been his age as of later in the year of 1852 and, hence, his year of birth would be 1845.

The Newcombe family is in North Dumfries Township of Waterloo County as of 1851 and since Nelson Newcombe is shown as an innkeeper, and since his obituary in the Dumfries Reformer states that he was the Black Horse Inn when he died in 1865, he was probably at the Black Horse Inn at least by the time of the 1851 census.

As of the 1861 census, Alfred appears as age 16, a laborer, working for and perhaps living with M. B. Perin, or Perine, in Waterloo Township.

As of the 1870 U.S. census in Detroit, Michigan, there is an Alfred Newcomb, age 26, born Canada. He is in boarding house, apparently connected with a hotel, and is probably the son of Nelson and Franey. He is shown as a hotel clerk.

Ancestry has a database for images of Michigan marriage records. This shows an Alfred Newcomb, age 25, residing in Springwells, Michigan. On February 12, 1875, at Detroit, he married Catherine McKenna, age 25, residing Detroit. Both are shown as being born in Canada. No parental information is given. The clergyman was a Pastor Charles Haass. The witnesses were Florence and Kate Daly. Alfred's occupation is shown as a saloon keeper.

It seems safe to say that Alfred Newcomb who married Catherine McKenna was indeed the same Alfred as the son of Nelson Newcombe and Franey Kinzie for we find Alfred and Catherine in the 1881 census in Canada at London, Ontario. They are in the household of William and Mary McKenna, ages 80 and 78, respectively. Alfred is shown as age 34 and Catherine as age 32. They have with them three children: Nelson, age 4; William, age 3; and Mary, age 5 months.

Catherine Newcombe, in the 1891 census at the city of London, Ontario, is shown as age 41 and a widow. With her are two sons and two daughters: Nelson, age 14; William, age 13; Minnie, age 11, and Maggie, age 9.

A later record for Alfred probably exists, but has yet to be found. The only other comment here of possible interest has to do with family relationships and connections.

It will be recalled that Alfred's father, Nelson, married a second time to a Sarah J. Sarah's married name was possibly Haugh, or Haught, or Waugh (quite possible), or Waught (rather unlikely). Nelson and Sarah had a daughter Esther born in 1860 or thereabouts. What's interesting is that on September 4, 1879, at Springwells, Michigan, a Frank Goodman, age 20, born Toronto, residing Springwells, married an Esther E. Newcombe, age 19, born Stratford, Ontario, residing Springwells. Frank is simply shown as a clerk. No parental information is given. The witnesses were Robert and Caroline Cooper.

Was Esther Alfred's half sister? Proof has yet to be found, but the Springwells connection would appear to provide an interesting lead.
