The 1901 census in Galt shows Edward's date of birth to be May 3, 1861. Generally and in different documentation, Edward's place of birth is shown as Alsace, France. The 1901 census, however, shows his place of birth as Germany. The short story is that both France and Germany might be said to have been his place of birth for Alsace certainly changed hands between the two countries. Edward may have lost track. Edward's place of birth simply says France on his marriage registration, but Millhouse, France on his death registration. Guessing a bit here, but Edward was probably born in Mulhausen. This was Mulhouse in the Alsation language. Edward and family appear in Galt as of the 1891 census. They must be mis-indexed in the 1901 census for it was necessary to go through the Galt census page by page to find them. (See Ancestry's image 166.) Edward's year of immigration is not shown. The 1921 census, however, shows his year of immigration as 1874. |
