| Note | It would seem that the gravestone for Jehial and Catherine was erected rather later than the dates of their deaths. Jehial's date of death is shown on the stone as 1882, but his death registration shows his death date as November 12, 1881. Son Henry Hurd is buried with them as well has Henry's first wife, Ann Jane McTavish and an infant daughter. Death reg. 005416-82 Euphrasia Township, Grey Co. Jehial Hurd died 12th November, 1881. Age 83. Farmer. Church of England. Born Ontario. Paralysis. 12 days ill. No physician. Informant Henry Hurd, Lot 7, Concession 4, Euphrasia. Henry reported Jehial's death on 12th December, 1881. The township clerk returned his reports on 11 January, 1882, and so it is under 1882 that the Archives of Ontario has the death indexed. Land: The every-person portion of the 1851 census for Osgoode Township in Carlton County has not survived. The agricultural census has survived and this tells that Jehial Hurd was on part of lot 4 of concession 1 of Osgoode. When son Henry showed his place of birth as 'Rideau' on his marriage registration with sarah Antoinette Bell Kerr in 1878, this may in some manner have been related to the Osgoode property, for the property is located close to the Rideau River. A difficulty with this information is that when the abstract index for lot 4 of the 1st concession of Osgoode is examined, Jehial's name does not appear. It may be that he was leasing the property. Available abstract index information for Jehial Hurd's property in Euphrasia probably does not tell a full story. He is shown as receiving a patent from the Crown for the full 200 acres of lot 8 on the 4th concession on 2 June, 1864, but the next line tells that he sold a portion of the property on 18 April, 1864, some weeks before he received the patent. There will be more to the story. When son Henry reported Jehial's death in 1881, he was said to be on lot 7 of the 4th, but there is a page missing of the available index, so Henry's history on the property is absent. |
