| Note | Census information for Isabella is of some interest. The 1851 census in North Dumfries Township shows Isabella with her widowed mother and her siblings. She is shown as age 31 and born in Scotland. The enumeration of the family is to be found on two pages, though it takes a bit of searching for the pages are out of order. The every person census is to be found; the agricultural census for North Dumfries has not survived. Bella, so shown, appears with the family in North Dumfries in 1861, though her place of birth is shown as New York, U.S. This is the more likely, considering she had an older sister said to be born in the U.S. Isabella has yet to be found in the 1871 Canadian census. Isabella is with her brother George, now widowed, in the 1881 census. George has with him one surviving son. Isabella is shown as being age 60. The 1891 census shows Isabella in Galt with Margaret Shepherd, who we must believe to be her sister, and they are in the household of Margaret's son Duncan. Margaret and Isabella are both shown as being born in the United States. Isabella died later the same year. Her place of birth is shown as North Dumfries. About the best we may say is that her parents were in Canada by the time of the 1824 list of communicants at First Church in Galt. Death reg. 016063-91 Galt, Waterloo Co. Isabella McLeish died 6th Nov., 1891, age 70. Unmarried. Born North Dumfries. Presbyterian. Physician Dr. Vardon. Informant Duncan Shepherd, laborer, Galt. The handwriting of town clerk, John G. Dykes, is difficult to put it mildly. Her death registration has been indexed by Ancestry, but the handwriting was beyond the persons doing the indexing. The registration was found based on her date of death as shown in First Church records (she is shown as Mrs. I. McLeish.) That she is indeed Isabella, we may safely say, for a few months earlier, Isabella is to be found in the home of Duncan Shepherd in the 1891 census. We must believe that Duncan, the informant in her death, was her nephew by way of her sister Margaret. A place of burial for Isabella has not been found. |
