The Waterloo branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society presents transcriptions of marriage notices to be found in the Dumfries Reformer during the years of 1860-1865. The paper's edition of 2 December, 1863, records the marriage of George McLeish of Dumfries to Margaret McKenzie of Beverly on 27 November, 1863, at Hamilton, by Rev. Dr. Irvine.

By 1863, old Dumfries Township had long ceased to exist along with the old District system of administration. When the County administration came into being, Dumfries was divided between South and North Dumfries. South Dumfries became a part of Brant County and North Dumfries became a part of Waterloo County. The McLeish family was in North Dumfries as of the 1861 and 1871 censuses. George and Margaret were with George's widowed mother as of the 1871 census and with them are two children. George's brother Robert was also present.
