NoteElizabeth's name, prior to her marriage to Joseph, was Martin. This is to be found on page 466 of A Genealogical Record of the descendants of Christian and Hans Meyer, and other pioneers, by Rev.A. J. Fretz, Milton, N.J., 1896, News Printing House, Harleysville, Pa. This does date Joseph's birth to 25 September, 1795, as opposed to 24 September. She is shown as Joseph's third wife, which is correct, though her given name is shown as Eliza. 'Elizabeth' is shown as her given name in this tree, for this is the way her name appears on census pages as well as her death registration. This latter information does make sense if for no other reason than the informant named on her death registration was Michael Martin of Clinton Township.

(The paragraph for Joseph Fretz does provide the dates of his marriages to Margaret Rittenhouse and Catherine Moyer, but not Eliza Martin.)

We have but two candidates for informant Michael Martin of Clinton Township: Michael Martin, farmer, Mennonite, age approximately 60 at the time of Elizabeth's death, and his son Michael Jr., age approximately 23.

Michael Martin Sr. died in 1888 in Clinton Township at age 68 years and 17 days. Interestingly, his place of birth is shown as Waterloo Township in Waterloo County.

Elizabeth's place of birth is shown on her death registration as Pennsylvania. While we may certainly say that there was a migration of Mennonites from Pennsylvania to the Niagara Peninsula, the migration from Pennsylvania to Waterloo Township was substantial, and the name Martin abounds in Waterloo County. Which is certainly of interest, but there is more to the story

That Elizabeth was a member of the family of the two Michael Martins of Clinton Township, we may reasonably say with safety. It is entirely possible that she was the mother of Michael Martin Sr., born in 1820, for she was certainly of an age to be such.

Which is a rather scenic route to say that her maiden name may not have been Martin, and which turns out to be the case.

For the following, see page 28 of Ezra Eby's Volume 2 of his 1896 work A Biographical History of Waterloo Township, etc., Berlin, Ontario.

The information of interest appears in the first two paragraphs.

The first tells us that Peter Martin, the third son of Peter Martin and Anna Zimmerman, was born on January 21st, 1799, and died on November 7th, 1834. He was married to Elizabeth Weber (date of marriage not given), and the couple resided in Woolwich Township. They had but one child, a son named Michael. Some time after Mr. Martin's death she married Joseph Fretz from The Twenty in Lincoln County where she afterward resided. A date for her marriage to Joseph Fretz is not given.

Considering the above and examining the information provided in her death registration, shown below, we must believe she spent her last days with her son Michael.
