| Note | An abstract index for lot 10 on the 7th concession of Clinton shows that the 100 acre property was sold to Tilman Houser on May 25, 1816, by John High. The 1842 Upper Canada Census shows Tillman Houser on lot 10 of the 7th concession of Clinton. Resident on the lot are 5 persons of Canadian (or British) origin; 2 persons of U.S. origin (Tillman and his wife Mary); and that the two persons of foreign origin (themselves) have been in the province for 41 years. The 1851 personal census for Clinton (the agricultural census for Clinton has not survived), shows Tillman and Mary Houser, ages 61 and 58 respectively, Mennonites, born in the United States. Children with them are Joseph 22; Tillman 20; Samuel 15; and Esther Wismer, 27, servant. The 1861 every persons census for Clinton shows Tillman and Mary Houser, evidently on their own, born in the United States, and ages 69 and 67 respectively. The agricultural census for Clinton for 1861 has survived and Tillman is shown on lot 10 of the 7th concession. Tillman died in February of 1871. The 1871 census was not begun until April 2nd of the year. Mary Houser does not appear in the 1871 census or in any later census, whether in Clinton or elsewhere. It does appear that they were both deceased. The Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society transcribed the Campden Mennonite Burial ground where, evidently, Tilman and Mary are buried, along with other Houser family members. The difficulty is that at time of transcription their gravestone, or stones, were in poor condition. With Tilman's inscription, it's recorded that he was born in October of 1792, though whether on the 10th or 19th, is unsure. Mary's stone is beside Tilman's and is in worse shape. It may be that, according to the transcription, she died in 1882, though there is no death registration to confirm this. We must believe her year of death, 1882 so transcribed, to be questionable.
