NoteBenjamin Brown does appear with wife Lavina in the 1851 census in Gainsborough Township. With them are 11 children (there were almost certainly more.) We would have no record of Benjamin's passing, but he is shown as being buried in Heaslip Cemetery in Gainsborough Township of Lincoln County. Years later, his son Hagar was buried with him.

1857 was well over a decade before death registrations were required and so, mostly, we have but the cemetery transcription to work with. This tells that he died on 26 December, 1857, and that he was of the age of 50 years, 8 months, and 5 days. From this, we may calculate his date of birth as being 21 April, 1807. (Probably approximate.) Beyond this, we have Rev. Donald A. McKenzie's extracts of Death Notices from the Christian Advocate, 1858-1872, Global Heritage Press of Milton (now of Ottawa), 2011, and page 33 tells an unhappy story, probably of Benjamin.

The issue of the Advocate from which the death notice is drawn is dated January 6, 1858. It says that Benjamin Brown of Wainfleet was accidently shot by his nephew on 'Monday of last week' while the parties were deer hunging.

The name Brown is common and that it might be Benjamin, father of Hagar, would be dubious, except that December 26, 1857, the date of Benjamin's death as it appears on his gravestone, is a Monday.

Militating against this story is that Benjamin is said to be of Wainfleet. The census for Wainfleet for 1851 has not survived so we cannot be sure that there was not another Benjamin Brown. Certainly, Benjamin and Lavina were in Gainsborough as of the 1851 census and Lavina, widowed, is in Gainsborough at the time of the 1861 census.

Numbers of transcriptions of newspaper obituaries are to hand, but nothing further relating to Benjamin's passing has been found.
