Dorothea Haller
ID # 8246, (1823-)
Birth | Dorothea Haller was born in 1823 at Germany. |
Marriage | She married Hartmann Ries on 5 December 1847 at Waterloo. The marriage registration for Hartmann and Dorothea is not to be found on the MS248 series of microfilms at the Archives of Ontario. Rather, it is to be found in the Wellington District marriage registration book. This went missing in very early years and was found in a bookstore by a vigilant lady who recognized it for what it was. She purchased the book of her own funds and donated it to the Wellington County Museum at Fergus, Ontario. This was microfilmed by the Museum and the information was transcribed by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai and appears in the series The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada / Canada West, Vol. 9, Part 1, Wellington District, 1840-1852, Global Heritage Press, Milton, Ontario (now of Ottawa). Rev. Jacob Huttner, minister of the Lutheran Church, in Preston (Waterloo Township) Hartman Ries to Dorothea Haller, both of Dumfries. 5 Dec. 1847, Waterloo, by banns. Rev. Huttner. Unquote This does not tell us if the marriage was held at Preston (now part of the City of Cambridge), or perhaps at the residence of a family member. Witnesses are not mentioned. Rev. Huttner had a substantial following, for his lists of marriages from this era are considerable. Given the date, it seems probable that the bride and groom were resident in Waterloo Township, where Preston is located, but by the time of the 1851 census (begun in January of 1852) Hartmann and his wife as well as his wife's family were located in North Dumfries Township. Only two years earlier, this would still have been the Gore District. |
