Brant County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by M. Fawcett, a minister of the Wesleyan Methodist Church for the year ending 31 December, A. D. 1863.

Jesse Smith, 23, born and residing S. Dumfries. Parents Peter and Lydia.
Hester A. Smith, 20, born and residing S. Dumfries. Parents Eli and Lavinia.
Witnesses Jas. German and Helen McRay(?), both of S. Dumfries.
On 19th May, 1863.

The clergyman was Michael Fawcett. He and his brother Thomas were Wesleyan Methodist ministers. Thomas and his history are recorded in this tree. Thomas had been at St. George for a time, but died as the result of injuries sustained in a train wreck in 1859. For at least a while Michael succeeded him.

The registration shows the place of birth for both parties as South Dumfries. At the times of their respective births, Jessie and Hester were born in Dumfries Township before it was divided in half, the north half going to Waterloo County and the south half going to Brant.

The name of the bride's father, Eli, is poorly written, but an examination of the 1851 and 1861 census pages for South Dumfries makes it clear enough that he was Eli and his wife was Lavinia.
