| Note | Death reg. 010438-80 Middleton Twp., Norfolk Co. William Gerhard died 14th March 1880. Aged 8 yrs., 7 mos., 7 dys. Son of Adam Gerhard, builder. Born Norwich, County of Oxford. Methodist. Physician and informant G. W. Wood, M.D. Cause of death diptheria. He was ill five days. A birth registration for William has not been found. His death registration, as noted, states his age at time of death to be 8 yrs., 7 mos., and 7 days. A transcription of his gravestone shows his age at time of death to be 7 yrs., 6 mos., 20 dys. His date of birth as calculated from his gravestone is 22nd August, 1872, and this is shown here. Dr. Wood submitted three reports of death to the recording clerk in Middleton Township on June 30th, 1880. All were children who died of diptheria and their dates were strung out from March to June. This was not exactly an epidemic, but diptheria was certainly common enough. Other physicians reported rather more deaths by diptheria later in the year. |
