| Note | Ezra Eby, in Volume 1 of his A Biographical History of Waterloo Township / and Other Townships in the County (Eby cast a wide net), Berlin, Ontario, 1895, on page 180, provides some history of the Bowman family. It is told that Anna Bowman married Jacob Filsinger on December 9, 1873, and Eby tells that Jacob's parentage was Conrad Filsinger and Margaret Schleckmann. Lutheran Church records from Germany provide a list of the children of Conrad (or Konrad) and Margaretha Schleckmann. Her surname gets spelled variously, but Schleckmann at worst will be close to correct and so is used here. Husband Conrad died in Germany in 1850 and so at some point Margaretha came out to Canada with her children. She was resident in Woolwich Township of Waterloo County when she died in 1881. She is buried in what is named in the present day as the Calvary United Church Cemetery at St. Jacobs. This is just north of Kitchener in Waterloo County. Death reg. 018630-81 Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Co. Margaret Filsinger died 28th June, 1881. Age 61 yrs., 9 days. Widow. Born Germany. Lutheran. Physician Dr. Robinson. Informant Jacob Filsinger, laborer, Woolwich. Margaretha's gravestone in Calvary United shows her dates of birth and death. It is in German and reads: Stone 6-8 Hier Ruhet in Gott / Margaretha Fillsinger / geb. den / 24, Juni 1820 / gest den 28, Juni 1881 / Alter 61 Jahren / u. 4 Tage / Verse / As will be seen, there is a slight variation regarding her lifespan as shown on her death registration. Her dates of birth and death, as shown on her gravestone, are probably correct. |
