Richardson Traviss
ID # 8066, (1869-1953)
Birth | Richardson Traviss was born on 12 May 1869 at York County. |
Marriage | He married Maria Young, daughter of Adam Young and Barbara Gabel, on 3 September 1890 at Saugeen Township, Bruce Co.. Mrge reg. 001744-90 Saugeen Twp., Bruce Co. Richard Travis, 22, bachelor, druge man. Religious denomination not given. Born York County, residing Owen Sound. Parents William and Emma Travis. Mary Young, 20, spinster, Evangelical Association. Born and residing Saugeen Township. Parents Adam and Margaretha Young. Witnesses David and Katy Hunt, Burgoyne, Bruce Co. On September 3rd, 1890, at Saugeen, by Rev. G. F. Schwarz. The above marriage registration has its problems. The bride's mother's name is shown as Margaretha. Unquestionably, she was Barbara (and this is shown on Maria's death registration as entered by her husband.) There was no other Adam Young in Saugeen, and, as well, the witnesses were obviously Mary, or Maria's, sister Catherine and her husband David. Anotha problem is that Mary's place of birth is shown as Saugeen when she was almost certainly born in Normanby Township. Her death registration simply shows her place of birth as Ontario. |
Death | He died on 20 November 1953 at age 84. |
Burial | He was buried at Newmarket Cemetery, Newmarket, York Co., Ontario. |
Note | The 1901 census shows Richard and Maria at Port Elgin. Richard is shown as being born in 1869 and Mary in 1870, but both are shown as being born May 12th. This agrees with the inscription on their gravestone in Newmarket Cemetery. Richard, or Richardson, Traviss was enumerated twice in this census. He also appears as a lodger at Bruce Mines in the Algoma District. There, his date of birth is shown as 17 May, 1869. That the 1901 census and the inscription on their gravestones agrees we may take as sufficient. |
