Note | Charles' date of birth, 25 March, 1869, is taken from the 1901 census at Rat Portage, Algoma District, and this will be correct, or at least approximately so. The 1871 census, begun in April of the year, shows Charles Alcock, age 2, with his parents Joseph and Sarah, in Thurlow Township of East Hastings. Belleville is located in Thurlow Township and that Charles recorded Belleville as his place of birth on his marriage registration will be at the least close. The Alcocks are shown in the 1871 census to be brickmakers, though there are farmers recorded on the same pages. All of which is probably a quibble, for the family was Wesleyan Methodist. Joseph and Sarah have some children recorded as being born in Belleville in the central repository of W.M. baptisms. We should not doubt that all the children were baptized. It seemed to depend on the clergyman. Not all were enamored of reporting these baptisms, but some were. Records of baptisms might well be found in local church registers. Such as may have survived could well record Charles' baptism. Mention is made of this because Find-a-Grave reports Charles' burial in North Battleford Municipal Cemetery, North Battleford, Saskatchewan. A photograph of his military gravestone is shown. His date of death is given as 14 Feb, 1951, and his age is shown as 82. 82 is close, to within a month. This would indeed make his birth year 1869. When he joined the army during the First World War, Charles gave his year of birth as 1873. Some birth registrations for the children listed below have been found, others have not. The 1911 census page showing the Alcock family has been poorly microfilmed. What we may say is that in 1911 the family was in Kenora. As of the 1916 census, the family is in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. This is much more readable. And this, with the censuses of 1921 in Douglas, Saskatchewan, and 1926 in North Battleford, Saskatchewan, all compare well for the names of the children, or such as were still at home. Consistently, the children are shown as being born in Ontario, except the last two, sons, who were born in Saskatchewan. |
