Charlotte Bennett

ID # 7985, (1852-1876)
BirthCharlotte Bennett was born in 1852 at Windfield, Suffolk, England.
MarriageShe married Ephraim Locke in 1870 at Stockton, England.
Based on an index provided by FreeBMD, Ephraim Locke and Charlotte Bennett were married in the 3rd quarter of 1870. The place of marriage, shown as Stockton, is actually a district and this is said to span the North Riding of Yorkshire and County Durham.

DeathShe died in 1876 at Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire, England.
NoteWhat follows is taken from the FreeBMD index and the 1881 census with some application of logic.

Ephraim married Matilda Scott in the 2nd quarter of 1878, so we must believe that Charlotte was deceased prior to that time. The FreeBMD index shows two Locke deaths in the district town of Middlesbrough (Yorkshire) in the 3rd quarter of 1876. One was that of Charlotte Locke, age 24, and Herbert Locke, age zero. The FreeBMD index also shows the birth of a son Herbert in the 3rd quarter of 1876, almost certainly the son of Ephraim and Charlotte. This might indicate that he was stillborn, but, more likely, being named, he probably lived a short time.

There may be another story, but it does appear that Charlotte died in child birth, or at the least soon after.

Ephraim later, with Matilda, had a son Herbert in approximately in approximately 1885. It was not uncommon, perhaps especially in England, to have a second child given the name of a child that was predeceased. We know of the second Herbert and his approximate year of birth from the enumeration of the family as they were at the time of the 1891 Canadian census at Rat Portage in the Rainy River District.
