Lucretia Matilda Courtnage
ID # 7978, (1857-1889)
Birth | Lucretia Matilda Courtnage was born in 1857 at Walpole Township, Haldimand Co., Canada West. |
Marriage | She married Philip Henry Wiggins, son of Robert Wiggins and Martha Maria Merigold, on 11 August 1881 at Walpole Township Haldimand Co., Ontario. Mrge reg. 003811-81 Walpole Twp., Haldimand Co. Philip Henry Wiggins, 26, bachelor, farmer, Baptist. Born Burford Twp., residing Woodhouse Twp. Parents Robert and Martha Wiggins. Lucretia Matilda Courtnage, 24, spinster, Baptist. Born and residing Walpole. Parents 'Jane' and Eliza Courtnage. Witnesses Lewis S. Smith and Emeline Smith, both of Waterford, Ont. On August 11th, 1881, at Walpole, by John Stewart. The handwriting on the above registration is not clear on all points. 'Jane' is written for Lucretia's father, but Lucretia is buried in the Courtnage burial plot in Hartford Baptist Cemetery in Townsend Township, Norfolk County, and it's evident that his name was James. Also, the handwriting for the bride's first name does appear to be 'Lucretia'. Her gravestone in Hartford Baptist Cemetery transcribes her name as Lauretta. Almost all other records show her by her middle name of Matilda. The Canadian Baptist edition of August 18, 1881, however, records her marriage thus: At the residence of the bride's father, Walpole on August 11th, by Rev. John Stuart, B.A., Mr. Philip H. Wiggins of Burford to Miss Lucretia M. Courtnage of Walpole. It would appear that her correct name was Lucretia. |
Death | She died on 22 October 1889 at Brantford, Brant Co., Ontario. |
Burial | She was buried at Hartford Baptist Cemetery, Townsend Twp., Norfolk Co.. |

They report it repaired in later years, but that all inscriptions were not visible. Lucretia is buried in the Courtnage family plot of this cemetey, but the OGS transcription shows her name as Lauretta. Also present is a damaged stone for daughter Lettie M., which inscription was barely readable, but whch we know from her death registration was in 1886. Interment.net transcribed this cemetery, apparently first in 1991 with later additions. They have Lucretia's name as Laura. This tree shows her as Lucretia. See marriage notes. |
