Thomas Service Rutherford
ID # 7907, (1841-1919)
Birth | Thomas Service Rutherford was born on 12 October 1841 at Dumfries Township, Gore District, Canada West. |
Marriage | He married Jane Lockie, daughter of John Lockie and Jane Milroy, on 21 November 1862 at North Dumfries, Waterloo County. MS248 reel 16, Vol. 75, page 81 Waterloo County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Robert Acheson, a minister of the United Presbyterian Church N.A. in Canada for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1862 Thos. S. Rutherford, 21, Born Dumfries, residing Burford. Parents Thos. Rutherford and Janet Hall. Jane Lockie, 19, born and residing Dumfries. Parents John Lockie and Jane Milroy. Witness John Lockie. On 21 November, 1862. A record of this marriage also appears on reel GS2987, available at the Archives of Ontario. The images are of First Church, Galt, marriage records. The microfilming of the page is of mixed quality and the writing for the Rutherford-Lockie marriage is quite faded. It may be of better quality on reel LCM-30, which is available at the United Church of Canada archives. Considering what can be viewed on GS2987, it does not appear to add any information to the above registration as it was filed with the Waterloo County registrar. Actually, a notice of this marriage was published in the 26 November, 1862 edition of the Dumfries Reformer. This does tell that the wedding was held in Dumfries. It does not say whether it was in Dumfries township, north or south, but considering Jane's family connections and where she herself was located in the 1861 census, it's reasonable to believe that she was married in North Dumfries. |
Death | He died on 14 October 1919 at Burford Twp., Brant Co., at age 78. |
Burial | He was buried at Burford Congregational Cemetery, Burford Twp.. |
Note | Death reg. 009012-19 Burford Twp., Brant Co. Thomas Service Rutherford died Oct. 14, 1919. Age 78 yrs., 0 months, 2 dys. Born Galt, Ont. Gentleman. Married. Place of death and place of burial Burford. Parents Thomas Rutherford and Janet Hall. Physician F. H. Johnston, Burford. Informant Aaron Rutherford, Burford. The above death registration has Thomas' place of birth as Galt. Looking over census information for Galt and for North Dumfries, Galt as a place of birth isn't out of the question, but 'near Galt' would probably be more accurate. Certainly, the family was in North Dumfries as of the 1861 census. Further, the 1841 census shows a Thomas Rutherford on lot 14 of the 7th concession. He is also shown as owning the property. Care is needed with this, for there was at least one other Thomas Rutherford present in the township and, possibly, in Galt as well. Onland.ca does show an Abstract Index for lot 14 on the 7th and this shows the sale of this property to Thomas Rutherford by William Dickson in 1840. This is all rather preliminary. The story is anything but clear, but we do show Thomas Service Rutherford's birth as being in Dumfries Township, though almost certainly the portion that was later North Dumfries. |
