BirthThomas Rutherford was born in May 1853 at Burford Twp., Brant Co..

A marriage registration for Thomas Rutherford and Jane Ann Bloodsworth has not been found. There is room for confusion with the Burford Rutherfords for there was also a Thomas Service Rutherford and his wife Jane Lockie located there.

DeathHe died on 16 April 1917 at Brantford, Brant Co, Ontario, at age 63.
BurialHe was buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Brantford, Ontario.
NoteA certain record for Thomas Rutherford in the 1861 census has not been found. The Brant County branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society did a transcription of the 1861 census for the whole of Brant County and this would seem to indicate that there are some pages missing from the available images for the Burford Township 1861 census as presented in Ancestry. Still, even with the transcription, a clear record of Thomas' presence in Brant County is absent. Neither have we found a certain record of Thomas in the 1871 census.

Thomas Rutherford, 27, is to be found with his wife Jane A.. 29, in Burford in the 1881 census and with them are three children, namely William B., age 4; Emmerson, age 2; and Nettie M., age 2 months. This would suggest that Thomas Rutherford and Jane Ann Bloodsworth were married in approximately 1875 or 1876.

What makes this enumeration interesting is the next immediate household is that of Thos. S. Rutherford, age 39, and his wife Jane, age 37. With them are five children, ages 14 thru 2.

It's tempting to say that they are related, and they may indeed be, but the death registration of the first Thomas, who died in 1917, shows his place of birth as Burford and his parents as William Rutherford and Elizabeth White. The second Thomas, full name Thomas Service Rutherford, died in 1919 in Burford and his place of birth is shown as Galt. His parents are shown as Thomas Rutherford and Janet Hall. This information agrees with his marriage registration.

The second Thomas, Thomas Service Rutherford, was probably born rather more accurately 'near Galt', probably in the township, Dumfries, later the portion known as North Dumfries, going by such census information as we can find, not to mention that this second Thomas was married in First Church in Galt. A church record, quite faded on the available image, does show him as married to Jane Lockie, and this agrees with his marriage registration, which has survived.

For the moment at least we will not belabour the record for Thomas Service Rutherford other than to say that the two households should not be confused.
