Elizabeth Rutherford

For the moment, the best we can say of the marriage of John Duff and Elizabeth Rutherford is that it was in August of 1837 in Scotland. There are two marriage records, both to be found in the database Scotland Marriages 1561-1910, as presented by Familysearch. It is possible that the two records are for the same couple, though this seems a stretch.

One has it that John Duff and Eliza Rutherford were married on 31 Aug 1837 in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland, and that Eliza's father was James Rutherford.

The other is in the same database and it states that the couple was married on 20 Aug 1837 at Bothwell in Lanark, Scotland.

The first record would appear to have the edge if only because the 1851 census in Pilkington Township, Wellington County, Canada West, shows the couple with a son named James Rutherford Duff. The 1841 census in Scotland, on the other hand, shows children Dorothy and Elizabeth Duff as being born in Lanarkshire, but not their parents.
