Maria Raymond Butler
ID # 7618, (1832-1892)
Birth | Maria Raymond Butler was born on 1 August 1832 at Richmond Hill, York Co., Upper Canada. |
Marriage | She married George Bennett, son of Matthew Bennett and Thankful (--?--), on 6 September 1853 at York County. MS248 reel 2, Vol. 12, page 219 Home District Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. Henry Dockham, minister, Methodist Episcopal Church, in the County of York, in 1853 On Sept. 6th, 1853 George Bennet of Trafalgar and Maria Butler of Whitchurch. No other information is given. Witnesses are not named. Parentage is not shown, though since Trafalgar Township was in Halton and Whitchurch in York, the marriage was probably held close to where the bride resided. Although the old administrative Districts no longer existed, the new counties came into being around 1850. It wasn't until around 1858 that the new county marriage register books came into use. Maria's obituary tells that she married George in 1858, but the above record showing an 1853 marriage will be correct. |
Death | She died on 4 July 1892 at Lambeth, Middlesex Co., Ontario, at age 59. |
Note | For the following, see Vol. 11 of Rev. Donald A. McKenzie's work Obituaries from the Christian Guardian, 1891 to 1895, Global Heritage Press, 2011, page 30. (At the time Global was in Milton, but is presently in Ottawa.) Rev. McKenzie's transcription of Maria's obituary shows her full maiden name to be Maria Raymond Butler. It tells that she was born in Richmond Hill on August 1, 1832. Her marriage is shown as being on September 6th, 1858, but other records show the correct year to be 1853. It goes on to tell that when Rev. George Bennett was superannuated she went to work to support them and that she died of lung disease at Lambeth (now part of London, Ontario) on July 4, 1892 and that she was buried in Delaware Cemetery. This appears in the Christian Guardian's edition of October 19, 1892, on page 667. |
