Isaac Blasdell died April 14th, 1875. Age 75. Farmer. Born Canada. Baptist. Physician Dr. Bigger. Informant illeg. McLean, Grocer, Lynden.

Isaac is buried in Lynden Cemetery. The transcription of his gravestone as transcribed by the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society is deceptive at first, for it reads:

Isaac Blasdell who died Apr 14, 1875, aged 6 mo.

Considering that we have Isaac's date of death in the above death registration, the cemetery transcription probably respresents a worn and faded stone. The transcription was done in 1983. More recently, a transcription was done by Interment.net in 2003 and this tells essentially the same information, only adding that the stone is broken. A picture of the stone has yet to be seen in more recent photo essays. Comparing Isaac's date of death as it appears on the gravestone and on his death registration, we must believe that they represent the same person.

There is a problem sorting out the wives of Isaac. The marriage registration for Jacob Blasdell and Jannet Ritchie shows Jacob's mother as 'Loda' Cope. An abbreviated obituary for Isaac Blasdell tells that he was married to Rhoda Cope and so it's reasonable that there was a handwriting issue when the Wentworth County Clerk entered the marriage information into the register. A problem we have with this is that in later years we find Isaac shown with wife Mary. She appears with him in the 1861 census in Glenelg Township, Grey County, as well as in the 1871 census in Beverly. Mary Blasdell died in 1887 in Ancaster and a grave for her has yet to be found.

We may now say that Isaac Blasdell was married to both Rhoda Cope and Mary Cope. That the two Cope women will have been related we may have no doubt, though just how that may be remains to be discovered.

The Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society provides a number of years of extractions from what was at first the Canadian Messenger and later the Canadian Baptist. This latter publication, in 1875, carried an obituary for Isaac Blasdell. It is said to be a long obituary and is evidently truncated as presented. It does tell us, however, that he was married to Rhoda Cope and that they had three children. The obituary tells us that he was born at Hallowell Bridge, Northumbria (presumeably in England), but census entries tell that he was born in Canada. It is said that when he came to Canada he spent time in Cramahe and then Haldimand, but that he then came to Beverly in 1822 and there married Rhoda. Since Mary Cope was evidently the mother of Angeline Blasdell and who was born in 1833, his marriage to Rhoda could not have been of long duration. A grave for Rhoda has not been found.
