Note | The marriage registration for Joseph Husband and Nancy Barlow is poorly written and not clear on all points, but it does tell that Nancy was born in Saltfleet Township (later a part of Wentworth County) and at the time of her marriage resided in Walpole Township in Haldimand County. Her parents are said to be James and Susannah. Her mother's name, Susannah, isn't clearly written on the marriage registration, but an examination of the 1851 census in Walpole Township makes the name clear enough. The census page tells that her father, James, was born in New Brunswick, and that her mother, Susannah, was born in the United States. Nancy and her siblings present on the page are said to be born in Canada. The Barlow family in Walpole was enumerated immediately before the family of George Husband, Joseph's uncle. It's a guess, but Joseph must have gotten around, perhaps working for a time in Walpole Township and, hence, meeting Nancy Barlow, for the 1861 census has him and Nancy in South Cayuga Township and Joseph is shown as a school teacher. With them is Joseph's sister, Sarah Anne, age 18, and a child, Theodore, age 2, the son of Joseph and Nancy. Joseph and Nancy are shown as New Connexion Methodists and Sarah Anne is shown as Episcopal Methodist. Joseph's middle name was evidently Alleyn, for the family is to be found in Metcalfe Township, Middlesex County, as of the 1871 census. There, he is shown as Alleyn Husband, age 31, an insurance agent. His wife Nancy is present, as well as Theodore A., age 11, and James A., age 9. There is a sort of sidebar story to the couple's stay in Metcalfe, a very sad one. Nancy had a sister, Mary Ann Barlow, who married a George M. Bertrand in 1867 in Haldimand County. Joseph A. Husband was the lone witness recorded at the marriage. Unique to Canada census pages, the 1871 census has a page at the end of each district that records deaths in the previous twelve months. The following is recorded in Metcalfe. Mary A. 'Bertran', age 24, is shown dying in August of 1870. Also a child, George A. Bertran, apparently age 6 weeks, died in August (he actually died the 4th of September). Nancy's family appears in Metcalfe as shown above, but George M. Bertrand is recorded as the lone resident in the next household. George filed a birth registration for his son, George Alleyn Bertran (so spelled), and a death registration for Mary and a few days later, Alleyn Husband filed the death registration for young George Bertran. A place of burial for Mary and her son has not been found. Since Alleyn was the middle name of Nancy's husband, Joseph, and since Joseph was the witness at the Bertrand marriage, he must have been a favored family member for the child to be so named. The family is in Sanilac, Michigan, as of the U.S. 1880 census. There, 'Allen' Husband is a farmer. With them are sons Theodore, age 20, and Allen J., age 18. As of the 1891 census, Nancy is in Hamilton, Ontario, with son Alleyn, age 29, who we must believe to be James. Nancy's husband, Joseph Alleyn Husband, has not been found in this census. Theodore is also in Hamilton. Both sons are married. Joseph died in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1905, and Nancy in the same place in 1911. They are both buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw. Death reg.
