Note | The Loft family appears in the 1851 census for England at Minster in Sheerness, Kent. William, age 41, born South Church, Essex, is shown as a blacksmith in the dockyard. The previous household is that of Frederick George Loft, age 36, born in the same place. He is shown as a smith in the dockyard. William's wife, Ann, age 40, is shown as born in Kent. A 'ditto' appears to show her place of birth as South Church. Their oldest son is shown as such as well, but they are clearly shown as being born in Kent, whereas William is shown as being born in Essex. There may be an enumerator's error here. Their children are: William W. 13, Mary A., 11, born Sheerness as are the later children. Elizabeth 9, Frederick G. 7, Edwin Hy 1. We also have a passenger manifest to work with. The family sailed on the Patrick Henry, from London to New York, apparently arriving October 28, 1857. They are destined for Upper Canada (by this time known as Canada West.) They are: William Lofft 48, blacksmith Ann 47, William, 20 blacksmith Mary Ann, 18, Elizabeth 16, Frederick 14 Edwin 8, Alfred 5, Augusta 2. The family is in Goderich Township at the time of the 1861 census. Again, William, age 51, is shown as a blacksmith. The family is shown as being members of the Church of England. Ann, age 50 Edwin 11, Alfred 9, Augusta 7. There is some evidence, as yet unresearched, that some of Ann's Wise family members may have come to Canada as well. William Lofft is buried in Clinton Cemetery, sec. B. His date of death on the stone reads March 17, 1887. He actualy died March 17, 1886, per his death registration. Death reg. 002022-86 Huron Twp., Bruce Co. William Lofft died March 17, 1886. Age 76, 5 months. Born England. Farmer. Methodist. Physician Dr. Smith. Informant John McTavish, Huron. William was living with daughter Elizabeth and her husband John McTavish as of the 1881 census in Huron Township, Bruce County. William was evidently a member of the Church of England as of the 1861 census. By 1871, he is shown as a Bible Christian. The 1881 census shows him as a Methodist, as does his death registration. The list of children shown for William and Ann are as found in the 1851 England census and the passenger list for the Patrick Henry as mentioned above. Some middle names have been found via FreeBMD and some birth years refined from this last as well. |
