Wentworth County Marriage Register

Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. James Cheetham of the Primitive Methodist Church for the year 1863

H. E. Harrison, 21, born England, residing Haldimand. Parents Joseph and Mary Harrison.

County marriage registrations do show the exact location of the marriage beyond the county that it was held in, but looking over other marriages performed by Rev. Cheetham, it seems likely that the ceremony was held in Hamilton.

NoteHe Birth and baptism information is to be found in the Wesleyan Methodist baptism pages as originating with the United Church of Canada Archives. This in turn is made available by Bower-McBurney Genealogy (see http://bowergenealogy.ca/resources/methodist/ ). This is an excellent genealogical asset.

The baptism of Abner, son of Joseph and Susannah Picket, appears on page 312, Township of Nelson, Gore District. It describes the residence of the parents as Nelson, Abner's place of birth as Nelson, the place of baptism as Nelson, Abner's date of birth as 18 January, 1843, and his date of baptism as 13 August, 1843. The officiating clergyman was M. Whiting.

There is a difficulty with the above, however. Abner's son Wesley shows his father's place of birth on the death registration as Seneca. Unquestionably, the Pickett family was in Seneca Township of Haldimand County as of the 1861 census. Much of the 1851 census hasn't survived and so this probably accounts for the family not being found in that census. The logic is that the baptism register is probably correct and that Abner was born in Nelson Township. A family bible, however, might tell a different story.
