ID # 7172, (1851-)
FatherThomas Stewart (1808-1890)
MotherHannah Smith (1810-1894)
BirthJohn Stewart was born in 1851.
NoteCensus information shows a son of Thomas Stewart and Hannah Smith, John, born in approximately 1851 and baptized on 9 Nov 1851 at First Church in Galt.

First Church baptism records also show a John Stewart baptized on 23 May 1847.

Note that there is a six year spread between the baptism of William Stewart in 1845 and John Stewart in 1851. The John Stewart baptized in May of 1847 appears approximately half way in between, but the only record found thus far for this John is that of his baptism at First Church.

Your researcher leans to the view (unproven, there is at least one other possibility) that John baptized in 1847 is the son of Thomas and Hannah and that he didn't survive.

The cemetery at Glen Morris was not at the time established and First Church's cemetery at High Park in Galt was still extant with the family attending at the church. In the 1880s, many gravestones and remains were dug up and moved to Mountview Cemetery, but not all of them. That a child was born and given a name of a family member, but who then didn't survive, and the same name given to a later child, isn't common, but certainly not unheard of.

When Rev. James Strang entered baptisms in the baptism book in early years, he only entered the name of the child and the date of baptism. Parental names were omitted. We are left to do our own spadework.
ChristeningHe was christened on 9 November 1851 at First Church, Galt.
