| Note | Such children as have been found for William Harkness and Helen Shank are identified by birth and baptism records. The exception Andrew Harkness, born in approximately 1831. He appears with his parents in the 1841 census taken at Stonykirk in Wigtonshire. The 1841 census lists, besides William and Helen, Margaret, age 19; Grace, age 13; Thomas, age 11; and Andrew, age 9. William and Helen have not been found in the 1851 census. The 1851 census at Barony (near Glasgow) does show a Thomas Harkness, age 21, as a visitor in the home of John McFarlane, age 25, born Glasgow, and Grace McFarlane, 24, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire. They have with them a daughter Helen, age, shown as age 1, born Glasgow. A baptism record for Helen shows her mother as Grace Harkness and is surely the sister of Thomas Harkness, visitor. William Harkness Jr., born in 1813, is in the 1841 census and married to Mary. They are living in Kirkmaiden. Beyond that, we have little information for the sibling of William Jr. An effort has been made to find some that might have come to Canada, but, if they did, they have yet to be found. |
