On 15 September 1915 at North Dumfries by Rev. R. Pettigrew, Glen Morris, Presbyterian. An interesting marriage registration. Rev. Pettigrew was minister at the Glen Morris Presbyterian Church in Glen Morris, South Dumfries Township of Brant County, though he officiated at the wedding in North Dumfries of Waterloo County. At a guess, the marriage was held at the home of the bride's family. Then, as well, Kenneth gives his residence as Glen Morris in South Dumfries, and Janet gives her residence as Glen Morris in North Dumfries. The village of Glen Morris is in South Dumfries Township, though it may be that Glen Morris was the postal address for both families. Or it may simply be that the two families thought of themselves as associated with Glen Morris. Certainly both have family members buried in the Glen Morris Cemetery. Dumfries was one township until the county system came into existance around 1851. The public wish of the day was very much that the township not be divided, the popular feeling being that the whole township should be associated with Brant County. The government of the day in Toronto thought otherwise and the township was split between north and south along the 7th concession. Unquestionably, in your researcher's not so youthful days, the 1970s come to mind, at least some Glen Morris people considered themselves closedly connected with Galt. There was unhappiness, say, when an elderly resident of Glen Morris found themselves going into nursing care in Brantford when they would have much preferred to go to Galt where friends and family were the more likely to be settled. That this sentiment was universal is hardly likely, but was certainly present. |
