Catherine Munro
ID # 699, (1839-1926)
Birth | Catherine Munro was born in 1839 at Glengarry County. |
Marriage | She married James Vrooman, son of Admiral Nelson Vrooman and Rachel Coleman, on 10 February 1859 at Caledonia, Haldimand County. MS248 reel 7, Haldimand County Marriage Register Page 22 Return of marriages solemnized by the Rev'd Andrew Ferrier, D.D., Minister of the United Presbyterian Church for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1859 No. 8217, County of Haldimand James Vrooman, 25, born and residing Dumfries Co. Parents Admiral Nelson Vrooman and Rachel Coleman. Catherine Munro, 19, born Glengarry, residing Caledonia. Parents Andrew Munro and Catherine Campbell. Witness James Campbell of Caledonia. Date of marriage 10th February (1859). The place of marriage is not stated, but Andrew Ferrier, who came from Scotland in 1846, was minister of what, by 1859, was the United Presbyterian Church. We cannot know if the marriage service was held at the bride's home or in the church, but we are safe in saying that it was held in Caledonia. Caledonia straddles the Grand River and most of the town is located in Oneida Township. A portion of it is located in Seneca Township. Both townships are in Haldimand County. |
Death | She died on 1 June 1926 at Harrisburg, South Dumfries, Ontario. |
Burial | She was buried on 3 June 1926 at Harrisburg Cemetery, Harrisburg, Ontario. |
Note | Death reg. 008795-26 South Dumfries, Brant Co. Kate Vrooman, died June 1, 1926, at Harrisburg Village in South Dumfries. Age 87 years. Scotch, widowed. Born Quebec, date of birth not definitely known. Parents' names unknown, but both born Scotland. Informant M.J. Vrooman, Harrisburg, son. Burial at Harrisburg Cemetery on June 3, 1926. At the time of Kate's death, evidently son Malcolm was unsure of her parents' name, but someone in the family must have come to the rescue at some point, for her maiden name is given as Munro on the stone that she shares with her husband James. Also, while Malcolm gives his mother's place of birth as Quebec, her marriage registration shows her place of birth as Glengarry County in Ontario. Since she will have given this information, Glengarry County is shown as her place of birth in this tree. It won't be entirely correct, for the county system will not have existed at the time of her birth. The 1851 census taken at Oneida Township in Haldimand County shows Catherine (Kate) with her family. Her father Andrew is shown as a tavernkeeper. We may note that she had older brothers Lawrence and Malcolm and we may reasonably guess that they named their sons after these two brothers. |
