The marriage of Ward Hamilton Bowlby and Lissie Hespeler took place on 10 April, 1861. This has not been found in the county marriage register, however, but in the Berliner Journal, extracted (and translated from German, where necessary) by staff in the Kitchener Public Library. Provision for these was made some years ago by the Waterloo Wellington branch of the Ontario Genealgical Society.

The marriage notice appears in the 11th April, 1861, edition of the Berliner Journal and tells that Ward Hamilton Bowlby, who holds an M.A. and is an advocate of the newspaper, married Lissie Hespeler, the oldest daughter of Jakob Hespeler, at the home of the bride's father in Hespeler. The marriage was conducted by Rev. E. R. Stimson.

Ward's death registration shows his place of birth as Waterford, and this is possible. Waterford is in Townsend Township of present day Norfolk County, though at the time of Ward's birth Townsend was actually in the Talbot District. The 1851 census places the family in Townsend Township. An index from a gazetteer from the 1870s shows Adam Bowlby, Ward's father, as owning three properties in Townsend. It may be that Ward was actually born in the township and that Waterford was the family's post office. For the moment, take that as a guess.

Ward's date of birth, October 4, 1834, is taken from the 1901 census.
