Frank Alma
ID # 6918, (1837-1839)

Mother | Emily Rankin (1803-1841) |
Birth | Frank Alma was born on 28 November 1837. |
Death | He died on 6 September 1839 at age 1. |
Note | Difficulties: Best as may be told, there were two sons named Frank and a daughter named Frances. The transcription of St. Mark's cemetery shows a son Frank buried in the family plot born 28 November, 1837, and died 6 September, 1839. Just how accurate this was at the time of the transcription we cannot not say. The St. Mar's archivist kindly looked at the stone and it is now sufficiently worn as to be quite uncertain so far as dates are concerned. The difficulty arises that in 1831 was baptized at St. Mark's on June 3, Frank Alma of John Lees and Emily. What makes this a tough one is that according to the passenger list of 1832 it is quite unlikely that they were in Niagara Town prior to that. Unquestionably, the 1831 baptism sits among others of the era and the archivist, looking over the actual baptism records, rather than a transcription, confirms that this is the case. Then, as well, looking over a transcription of the baptisms, there is a goodly sequence of them done in 1837, but not one for an Alma, even though Alma children may be found baptized before and after 1837. To add to the confusion, it seems reasonable to show Frances Flora Alma, died 31 July, 1841, aged 9 months and 12 days, as a daughter. The difficulty with this is that her baptism record of December 26, 1840, per the St. Mark's archivist, shows this child as a male. This could be an error in entry on the part of the clergyman, but...quite possibly it is correct. For the time being, we make the best of it with the cemetery transcription. This was done by the Niagara branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society in 1991, some 30 years ago. We'll have to trust as best we may to this transcription. Certainly, we have no other. The only other thing to be said, again per the church's archivist, is that the records are very intermittent so far as burial records are concerned. |
