MS248 reel 17, Vol. 82, page 198 Wentworth County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. J. Gamble Geddes, Church of England Frederick (Guggisberg), 28, born Canada, residing Galt. Parents Samuel and Agatha Guggisberg. Dora Louisa, 21, born Canada, residing Winona. Parents John W. and Sophia Willson. Witnesses John Gordon of Toronto and John Calder of Hamilton. On 28th October, 1868. The county marriage register's do not typically show the exact location of a marriage. Some implications may be taken, but while the marriage almost certainly took place in the county wherein the marriage was registered, this is not always certain. Rosemary Ambrose, however, has transcribed birth, marriage, and death notices from the Dumfries Reformer. The November 4, 1868 edition of this newspaper tells that on 28 October, 1868, Frederick Guggisberg of Galt married Dora Louisa 'Wilson' at Christ Church in Hamilton. The clergyman was Rev. James Gamble Geddes. Dora is said to be the third daughter of John W. Wilson, Oak Grove, and the granddaughter of the late Hon. John Wilson. |
Marriage | She married Thomas Ramsey Dinnis in 1886 at England. |
Death | She died on 3 April 1922 at Kensington, London, England, at age 74. |
Burial | She was buried at Highland Road Cemetery, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. |
Note | So far as early census information is concerned, we apparently have 'Dorith', age 6, listed as a daughter of John and Sophia. Her name is ill-written, but it becomes apparent from her marriage register and comparing her age at the time that her name was actually Dora Louisa. After the death of Frederick, the 1876 Toronto City Directory shows Mrs. D. Guggisberg residing with her sister and brother-in-law (Pedro Alma). The 1879 Toronto directory shows her as a widow at 292 King St. West. By 1886, Dora is in England and an index has been found for her marriage to a Thomas Ramsey Dinnis. They were married in the first quarter of the year in the Portsea Island District. By the time of the 1891 England census, Dora is with husband Thomas in Portsea, Hampshire, and, evidently, children of Thomas' by a first marriage. Find-a-Grave provides information as to the date of Dora's birth and her death in 1922. She is buried in the Highland Road Cemetery in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. |
