Stephanie Hespeler

ID # 6872, (1828-1921)
FatherJohann Georg Hespeler (1784-1840)
MotherAnna Barbara Wick (1791-1881)
BirthStephanie Hespeler was born on 22 June 1828 at Germany.
MarriageShe married Adam Warnock, son of John Warnock and Annie Hunter, in 1850 at Berlin, Waterloo Co., Canada West.
Adam and Stephanie were married by Rev. Frederick W. Bindemann in the year 1850 at 'Greenbush', Waterloo. When Rev. Bindemann submitted the list of marriages to the Wellington District Registrar, he showed only the year, January 1, 1850 to January 1, 1851. The best we may say is that Adam and Stephanie were married in 1850. Greenbush was Bindemann's residence and this is on King Street in present day Kitchener where the Grand River Hospital now stands.

The Wellington District marriage register is only to be found at the Wellington County Museum in Fergus. It has been transcribed. See The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada / Canada West, Wellington district, Vol. 1, part 1, 1840-1852, Compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2000, page 102

Adam and Stephanie's entry simply reads:

Adam Warnock, Merchant of Galt, to 'Isephany' Hespeler, of Preston. By licence. Rev. Bindemann.
Wit. Frederick Guggisberg of Waterloo and James Warnock of Dumfries

That Stephanie's name is apparently mispelled may be anything from a handwriting issue of either Rev. Bindemann or the recording clerk, or simply a transcription issue. There is another possiblity, however. It has been said (source lost) that Anna Barbara Wick Hespeler had, on her mother's side, ancestry of Hungarian nobility. 'Isephany' may, at some level, be an approximation of this - which does nothing to assist in finding a birth record for her.

DeathShe died on 4 June 1921 at Galt, Waterloo Co., Ontario, at age 92.
BurialShe was buried on 6 June 1921 at Trinity Anglican Cemetery Galt.
NoteStephanie's year of birth presents us with some difficulty. Birth information for her siblings appears, via Ancestry, in the Lutheran birth and baptism records in Germany, but Stephanie's birth record there has yet to be found. The 1901 census at Galt shows her date of birth as 22 June 1830. The 1911 census shows her birth as being in June of 1830. Since her brother William (Wilhelm) is recorded in the Lutheran records as being born in December of 1830, this doesn't work.

The 1851 census at Galt, actually begun in January of 1852, asked the question: What is your age as of your next birthday. The answer given here is that she would be age 20. This would place her birth in 1832, but brother Maximillian was born on 9 June of 1832, according to the Lutheran records, so this doesn't work.

Stephanie is buried with her husband, Adam Warnock, in Trinity Anglican Cemetery in Galt, and her gravestone shows her year of birth as 1828. This is probably closer to the truth and certainly poses no problems so far as her siblings years of birth are concerned. That she was, per the 1901 census, born on the 22nd of June of the year is probably correct and so is shown here.
