Eliza Smith
ID # 6816, (1832-)
| Father | John Smith |
| Mother | Mary Corbett |
| Baptism | Eliza Smith was baptized in 1832. |
| Marriage | She married Oscar F. Chamberlin on 30 January 1854 at Talbot District. MS248 reel 4, Vol. 22, page 147 Talbot District Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Rev. J. Gundry for the year 1854. Oscar F. Chamberlin and Eliza Smith, both residing Burford, Oxford Co. Witnesses John Shephard and Martha Bray. By License. Rev. Joseph Gundry was a Baptist minister. Certainly, the 1851 census at Brantford records the Smith sisters as being Baptists. In May of 1849, the old Talbot District ceased to exist and most of the area covered became the new Norfolk County. The clerk of what became Norfolk County continued to enter marriages in the old Talbot District register and this is what we see for the recording of the marriage of Oscar and Eliza. The above registration does not tell us where in Norfolk County the marriage was performed. It does not tell the ages of the couple, though we have sufficient census guidance for this so far as Eliza is concerned. To date, the above record is the only direct reference we have of Oscar F. Chamberlin. The only other guidance found so far is the marriage of Eliza's daughter Eva, which names her father as Oscar Chamberlin. |
| Note | Eliza Smith was living with her sisters in Brantford at the time of the 1851 census (enumeration of which was begun on January 12 of 1852). The age question was: What is your age as of your next birthday? If the question was asked and answered correctly, then Eliza was almost certainly 19 when the enumerator called and the correct answer would then be 20. The census page also shows that she was born in England. The year 1832 was the likely year of her birth. Her marriage registration shows her living in Burford as of January of 1854. This could be the village or the township. The 1870 U.S. census in Maquoketa, Iowa, shows Eliza with her children - Oscar is not present. Her oldest child, Mary, age 15, is shown as being born in Canada. The other children, Eva being the oldest at 12, are all shown as being born in Illinois. They have yet to be found in the 1860 U.S. census. It is entirely possible that the Chamberlins were on the move in 1860-61. Daughter Mary is with her aunt and uncle, Louise and Richard German in St. Mary's, Perth County, Canada West, at the time of the 1861 Canadian census. |
