Note | See publication nbr 3357, Ontario Genealogical Society, Niagara Branch, St. Mark's Anglican Church and Cemetery. This is a transcription of St. Mark's cemetery as done in 1990. Page 18 of this transcription shows the inscription for the gravestone of Andrew Putman and his wife Sarah. Also shown in the same plot are two burials of sons of Henry and Elizabeth Putman. As well, and in the same plot, there is the following: In Memory of George Young, who died July 15, 1825, AE 64 years. Elizabeth his wife died June 21, 1848, AE 95 years There is no evidence that daughter Rebecca and her husband Jacob Putman are buried in this plot. At the same time it is evident that when the family of George Young purchased this plot there were several burial spaces available and so later family members were buried here, even though George and Elizabeth were evidently Presbyterian. See Vital Records of Upper Canada/Canada West, Volume 1, part 4, Niagara District, 1820-1869, compiled by Dan Walker & Fawne Stratford-Devai, Global Heritage Press, 2013, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Niagara-on-the-Lake, page 45. This reads: Elisabeth, widow of George Young of United States, buried 23 June, 1848, age 95. At first glance, the above is counterintuitive. Elizabeth obviously had a Presbyterian burial service, but, if the gravestone inscription is correct, she is buried in St. Mark's Anglican cemetery with her husband who died in 1825. A transcription of St.Andrew's Cemetery is to hand and there is no record of an obvious family member therein being buried. Correspondence was entered into with an archivist at St. Mark's and he explained that since St. Mark's was in early days the only cemetery in Niagara Town it was actually the town cemetery. Then, in the mid 1830s, the then Anglican bishop suggested to the Presbyterian and Roman Catholic churches that they create their own cemeteries - and they did. A transcription of the Roman Catholic St. Vincent de Paul church records is to hand and it shows burials from 1827 as being in 'the Niagara cemetery'. This will be St. Mark's. The St. Mark's archivist also explained that the St. Mark's burial records only cover Anglican burials. Since this is obviously a family plot it is then entirely logical that Elizabeth was buried with her husband George. For the following, see C-2980 Vol. 549, bundle Y 3, petition 7. On 31 July, 1797, at Niagara (presumeably Niagara Town), Elizabeth Young, wife of George Young an daughter of Capt. James Clement, petitions for 200 acres of land as the daughter of a Loyalist (DUE). |
