Richard Fisher Fellows

ID # 6414, (-1826)
MarriageRichard Fisher Fellows married Charlotte Morson on 14 April 1816 at St. Mary Rotherhithe, Surrey, England.
We have two documents relating to the marriage of Richard Fellows and Charlotte Morson.

The first is to be found under Marriage Bonds & Allegations for London and Surrey and relates to a bond assumed by Richard Fellows of the Parish of Saint Paul Deptford in the County of Kent for two hundred pounds lawful money to the effect that he, a bachelor, will marry Charlotte Morson, spinster, of the Parish of St. Mary Rotherhithe, of the County of Surrey. This is dated 13th April, 1816.

The second is a marriage record. This reads:

Page 74
Marriages solemnized in the Parish of Saint Mary Rotherhithe in the County of Surrey, in the year 1816.

Richard Fellows, bachelor, of the Parish of Saint Paul Deptford in the County of Kent
and Charlotte Morson spinster of this Parish
were married in this church by licence
this fourteenth day of April in the year one thousand eight hundred and fourteen.
(The year 'fourteen' can only be a slip of the pen by the curate. The marriage bond makes this clear enough. As well, the page makes it clear that the marriages thereon are for 1816 and every other marriage on the page is dated 1816.)

Witnesses James Smyth and Sarah Lewis.

DeathHe died on 9 April 1826 at Colombo, Ceylon.
NoteThe source for information regarding something of the history of Richard Fisher Fellows (or Fellowes) and of his passing is to be found in Tombstones and Monuments in Ceylon, With an Obituary of Persons Uncommemorated (no gravestone found), J. Penry Lewis, Columbo, 1913, page 394.

The referred-to book, Letters from Ceylon, has yet to be found.

Probably, Richard Fisher Fellows had more than one leave for England. Daughter Charlotte was baptized at Castletown, Isle of Man, on May 22, 1827. Her parents are shown as Richard Fisher Fellows and Charlotte Morson. We can't be absolutely sure of his presence there, but wife Charlotte with a young daughter were unlikely to make the arduous sea voyage to England alone. Given Richard's death date as shown above, however, by whatever means, Charlotte Morson Fellows was on the Isle of Man as of her daughter's baptism date.
