NoteFor the following see Library & Archives Canada microfilm C-2948, Vol. 516, V bundle 14, image 00141, petition 8, dated 1 May, 1824, at Dumfries. This was the petition of David Van Every Junior. In it, he states that he was a native of Montreal in Lower Canada, 'now residing in the Township of Dumfries.' We take David's approximate year of birth, 1779, from his age as shown as 4. By this time, 1783 he was at Niagara and with his parents and listed on the victualling list of Capt. John McDonnell of Butler's Rangers. (See Norman Crowder's Early Ontario Settlers, 1993, Genealogical Publishing Co.)

The file cover indicates that while David Jr. has had land grants, he is in distress. He has ten children, there is an illegible note to do with his wife, and he has his mother in his care. He appears to have received an extra land grant.

It was probably not unusual that a Butler's Rangers family was in Montreal as of 1779. Sgt. Adam Vrooman was at Niagara and on the 1783 victualling list, but the 11 July 1782 edition of the Montreal Gazette indicates that there was a letter awaiting at the post office for Adam Vrooman. The victualling lists at Niagara are a snapshot in time. It's evident that these families were more mobile that a given list would indicate.
