Note | Death reg. 020442-88 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. Peter McClure died December 2, 1888. Age 75. Farmer. Born Scotland. Presbyterian. Physician Dr. Manes. Informant Peter McClure Jr. Per usual, the handwriting of the township registrar, Wallace McDonald, is difficult. There is an abbreviation after the name of the informant. It appears to be Kir. and is probably for Kirkwall. That's a guess. Land notes: The death registration for Helen McMicking McClure shows her residence to be Concession 5, Lot 13, of Beverly. Peter appears on the abstract index for lot 13, concession 5, in a series of transactions (only page 1 of the abstract index is to hand.) He is shown as purchasing the north half of the south half on 9 August, 1856. He is shown as purchasing the south half of the east half on the 5th of October, 1859. He apparently discharges a mortgage on the east half of the 200 acres township lot on 18 February 1865. An 1875 Atlas of Wentworth County shows him holding unstated portions of lots 10, 13, and 14, of the 5th concession. The McGill University's county map project provides images of these maps and it appears that his properties were in the general vicinity of present day Highway no. 8. The above land information is a very incomplete story, but it does appear to tell that the McClures prospered. (The 1861 agricultural census in Beverly Township shows Peter on concession 4, lot 6. As mentioned, 'very incomplete.) Looking over the 1841 Scottish census as transcribed by Ancestry, is that Peter and Helen reside in Inch Parish in Wigtownshire as of the 1851 census and so did not come to Canada until some time later, the story of which is rather confused. The 1861 census in Beverly shows daughter Mary Ann as being born in Ireland in 1852. Son John is born in Ireland in 1856, and daughter Ellen is born in Ireland in 1857. This is rather confimed by the 1871 census which shows John and Ellen (or Helen) still with their parents and the census still shows their place of birth as Ireland. Also present in 1871 is son Andrew, born in approximately 1863. Needless to say, this presents difficulties so far as Peter McClure being in Canada and purchasing land in Beverly Township in 1856. There could be a census error, or one of the children could be a foster child. The transcription of Kirkwall Cemetery does at least assist to a degree. |
