| Marriage | She married George Salmon Mattice in 1848 at Talbot District. The Talbot District Marriage Register which appears on: MS248 reel 4, Vol. 22, page 82, is the rather inadequate source for the marriage of George Mattice and Deborah Stringer. At the top of the page appears a list of four marriages, all performed in 1848. No dates are given, nor residences, nor witnesses. One of the marrages, that of George and Deborah, is by banns, the other three marriages are by license. These marriages were performed by James Booth, Wesleyan Minister. No other information is provided. One transcription would have it that there were two witnesses for the marriage of George and Deborah, but the names given are actually those of one of the other three contracting partners. Deborah's name appears to be spelled as 'Stronger'. An interpretation of the entry would have it that William Lucas and Elizabeth Waterhouse, whose names appear opposite to those of George and Deborah were witnesses at George and Deborah's marriage. An examination of the names of William and Elizabeth Lucas in the 1851 census at Simcoe town should clarify the situation if an examination of the page in the Talbot District Marriage Register leaves any doubt. The Talbot District was made up of townships that were in latter day Norfolk County plus the townships of Walpole and Rainham which were later located in Haldimand County. |

Deborah's death registration tells that she was born in Woodhouse. This is entirely possible, but...perhaps not. Her Wesleyan Methodist baptism record places her birth in Willoughby Township. See notes for her father. The information provided may be correct, but this isn't entirely certain, either. |
