Marriage | James McVicker married Ann Howes, daughter of Augustus Howes and Ann Hay, on 31 August 1876 at Kincardine, Bruce County. Mrge reg. 001587-76 Kincardine, Bruce Co. James McVicker, age full, bachelor, laborer, Presbytrian. Born Ireland, residing Kincardine. Parents John and Catherine McVicker. Annie House, age under, spinster, Methodist. Born Canada, residing Kincardine. Parents Augustus and Ann Howes. Witnesses Conrad House and illeg. House, both of Kincardine. On August 31, 1876, at Kincardine, by Wm. Anderson, M.A. The bride's name is shown as House; her father's is shown as Howes. The town of Kincardine was in the township of Kincardine in Bruce County. Both municipalities had their clerk's for purposes of civil registration. The township marriages for the year 1876 clearly identify Kincardine Township. The town registrations are simply identified as 'Kincardine'. The clerk at Kincardine town, John Hunter, had idiosyncatic handwriting to put it mildly - at times to the point of illegibility. An added wrinkle is that John Hunter's entries appear in two different hands. At a guess and since John Hunter was evidently the designated clerk, the rather more legible handwriting was that of someone else - perhaps a family member. The 1881 census clearly shows Augustus House and family as residing in Kincardine town. |
