Mary Elizabeth Rath died Feb. 19, 1910 at lot 23, range 4, Proton Township, Grey County. Place of birth not given. Place of death lot 230, range 4. Age 65 years, 2 mos., 15 days. Born Dec. 4, 1845. Housewife. Widowed. Father William John 'Selu', born New Brunswick. Physician Dr. James McWilliam. Informant Lizzie Kemp, Culross Township.

Mary's place of birth is shown on her marriage registration as Norwich and this is probably correct. This was in the Brock District, later known as Oxford County. The 1851 census for Norwich has survived and the Titus family is shown as being in the south half of Norwich Township, later known as South Norwich. It's interesting that Mary's grandparents, John and Elizabeth, had the same given names as her parents. This appears on the 1851 census page.

The 1851 census was not begun until January of 1852 and South Norwich was probably already in existence, though only recently.

Mary's father's name was Titus. Looking at the clerk's handwriting on the death registration, it's probably safe to say that the clerk did not perceive that on the form that had been turned in. (There was probably a handwriting issue.) It is safe to say, however, from marriage and census information that her father's surname was Titus.

The 1891 Farmer's Directory for Grey, Bruce, Simcoe, shows Mary Rath, apparently with son James A. Rath, at lot 230, concession 4. Both of them are shown as freeholders. Their postal address is Dundalk.

The McGill University Digital Map collection shows a map of Proton Township, evidently extracted from an 1880 gazetteer. This is too early to show the Rath or Titus family, but it does indicate that Proton actually consists of two surveys, one being the main part of the township, and the other a sort of gore which includes the village of Dundalk. The information provided seems to indicate that when the family did settle in Proton it was actually in the gore that they located. Certainly the lots were described with three digit numbers as with lot 230 as shown above.
