Note | Death reg. 018073-93 Stamford Twp., Welland Co. Elgin T. Misener died May 8th, 1893. Age 40 years. Born Crowland. Episcopalian. Switchman. Cause of death 'killed by cars, 4 hours'. Physician Dr. McGarry. Informant W. Morse, N. F. Sth (Niagara Falls South). It's possible to expand on the above death registration. For this, see Douglas Robbins 1991 work Burial Records and Notations of William Dalton, 1845 - 1916, page 120. William Dalton was the sexton of Drummond Hill Cemetery from 1876 to 1916, earlier records being those of Emmanuel Pidgeon. Page 120 of this work lists the burial of Elgin Misener on May 12th, 1893. Not many of the Miseners were of the Church of England, but the death record is correct in showing Elgin as an Episcopalian, for the burial service, according to Dalton, was conducted by Rev. Cannon Bull of All Saints Church. He was buried by the Masons of St. Marks Lodge 53 of Drummondville. Dalton notes that Elgin was killed in the Montrose Yard while 'cuppling' cars, his foot having been caught.' Dalton goes on to say that Elgin 'was liked by all that knew him.' Dalton notes his age as 40. The Niagara Peninsula branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has published the Burial Register of All Saints Church of Niagara Falls. (See publication C010.) Page 51 shows: Elgin Thomas Misener Age 36 years Employee M.C.R.R. Born Crowland, Ont. Date of Burial May 12, 1893 Where interred Lundy's Lane Cemetery. Remarks residence 2 miles south. Information, based on Harley Misener's 1953 papers and evidently from family bibles, tells that Elgin was born on 6 December 1851. This would make his age 41 years and 5 months at the time of his death. Niagara Falls Cemeteries shows two photos of the Drummond Hill grave. One is of a large stone with just the word Misener on it. Beside it is a footstone that reads: Father / Elgin / 1852 - 1893. The footstones for Elgin's wife and two children are similar. The All Saints record is incorrect in stating that Elgin was buried in Lundy's Lane Cemetery. He is unquestionably buried in Drummond Hill. Confusion occasionally arises here, for both cemeteries are on Lundy's Lane. It is true that Dalton was occasionally called upon to bury someone in another cemetery and he might or might not make mention of it in his ledgers, but, along with above record from Niagara Falls Cemeteries, the Niagara branch of the OGS has published a transcription of Lundy's Lane Cemetery and Elgin is not recorded as being buried there. Dalton is quite clear that he is buried in Drummond Hill. This tree shows Elgin's date of birth, 6 December, 1851, based on information in the Harley Misener papers and apparently from family bible information. Harley's information stands up well, indeed being found invariably accurate when supporting information is found - which in the end is the only defense for the entry of the date shown. Beyond this and with regard to birth order, Elgin appears with his family in Crowland in the 1861 census, his birth being between that of Henry and Charles. If for some reason his date of birth isn't accurate, it will be close. |
