Wentworth County Marriage Register

Extracted from a brief list of marriages solemnized by Rev'd. F. M. Smith of the Episcopal Methodist Church for February of 1869

Ralph 'Martin', 39, born England, residing Beverly. Parents Ralph and Mary Martin.
Emma 'Wisner', 40, born and residing Beverly. Parents Peter and Maria Wisner.
Witnesses James and Ellen Sager, both of Beverly.
On Feby. 17, 1869.

The only reasonable explanation for the misspellings above would be that the recording clerk at Hamilton had difficulty reading the handwriting of Rev. Smith. They are Ralph Morton, and of course the witness, Ellen Sager, was Emma's sister and James Sager was Emma's brother-in-law.

DeathHe died on 2 November 1889.
BurialHe was buried at West Flamborough Presbyterian Cemetery.
NoteIn 1989, the Hamilton branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society transcribed the West Flamborough Presbyterian Cemetery at Christie's Corners. This probably gives us the clearest information available, especially so far as the gravestone of Ralph Morton is concerned. A photo of this stone does appear on CanGenWeb, but it is in worn and broken condition, and nearly unreadable.

The OGS transcription reads:

In memory of Ralph Morton / died 2nd Nov. 1889 /aged 65 yrs / 5 mo's. & 2 days.

This is identified as stone nbr. 43 and seems to bear no connection to the gravestones of those around it.

Isabella is buried in this cemetery as well, but her stone is shown as nbr. 31.

A death registration for Ralph Morton has not been found.
