The following is extracted: Elizabeth Scott, Christening date 23 Apr 1848 at Tundergarth, Dumfries, Scotland. Birth date 26 Mar 1848. Parents James Scott and Helen Nichol. We must believe this child to have died in infancy, for James and Helen had a daughter in 1850 whom they named Elizabeth Sanders Scott. Certainly, by the time of the 1851 census at Tundergarth, there is 11 month old Betsy Scott with the family, but no child with an age suggesting a birth year of 1848. Giving the name of a deceased child to a later one was not uncommon. |
