Note | James' death registration shows his place of birth as Ireland. The 1861 and 1871 censuses place his birth in Scotland. His wife is stated to be born in Scotland. Records show that they were married in Scotland and that their (presumed) first born was born in Scotland. We show James as being born in Scotland. Death registrations in particular are prone to error, but anything is possible. Death reg. 017495-77 Beverly Twp., Wentworth Co. James Garroch died 24 January 1877. Farmer. Born Galway, Ireland. Presbyterian. Physician and informant Dr. Smith M.D., Beverly. See McGill University's The Canadian County Atlas Digital Project. This shows maps as well as textual information for the property owners. The information shown for Beverly Township is extracted from an 1875 atlas. This shows James Garroch as a retired farmer. It does not show his property, but does show him settling in Beverly as of 1835. His sons A & R Garroch (apparently Anthony and Robert) are shown as being on lot 7 of the 7th concession. The 1835 date for the family's settlement in Beverly should be fairly accurate for son Alexander is said to have been born in Prescott in 1833. Daughter Jane is born about 1838 and her death registration tells that she was born in Beverly. Probably, there was a child or two born between Alexander in 1833 and Jane in 1838 for whom we have no record. In 1835, Beverly Township was in the Gore District and was part of Wentworth County at the end of the district era. Land records for Beverly in the Gore District frequently mention Halton County. This has little to do with present day Halton County. Rather, at the time of the Garroch family's settlement in Beverly, 'Halton County', so referred, was an electoral riding. Land records of the day might refer to a person as being of the Township of Beverly, in the County of Halton, in the District of Gore, in the Province of Upper Canada. The electoral riding of Halton County was vastly larger than present day Halton County. It's probably a testament to the small population base that the Halton County electoral riding seems to have returned only two members to the provincial legislative assembly. The 1861 and 1871 censuses show the birthplace of both James and Catherine as Scotland. |
