Note | Clarence signed up for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on November 30, 1916. Originally, he gave his next of kin as his father, Francis Simpson of Thornhill. Then he had his status changed to married and gave his next of kin as Carrie Agnes Simpson care J.G. Scott, Barrie. In his attestation papers he says that he is a farmer. According to this same document, he had been a private with the Q.O.R (Queen's Own Rifles?) for 9 years. He had also served with the 6th C.M.R. (S.A.) for 6 months as a trooper. This was the Canadian Mounted Rifles in the South African War. Clarence's service records with the Canadian Mounted Rifles describe him as a fair rider and a good shot. |
