Christian Frey

ID # 5500, (1822-1902)
BirthChristian Frey was born on 16 June 1822 at Duhren, Baden, Germany.
MarriageHe married Anna Musselman, daughter of Frederick Musselman and Anna Erb, on 29 April 1845 at Wellington District.
The marriage registration volume for the Wellington District is not to be found on microfilm at the Archives of Ontario. The register was found in a book store and purchased by an interested person and then placed in the Wellington County Museum at Fergus. It is understood that it may be viewed on microfilm at the museum, but it has also been transcribed by Dan Walker and Fawne Stratford-Devai. This has been published under the title The Marriage Registers of Upper Canada / Canada West, Wellington District, Volume 9, part 1 and 2 and printed by Global Heritage Press, Milton, Ontario (now in Ottawa), in the year 2000

Page 32 of this publication shows a list of marriages by Rev'd Benjamin Eby, Minister of the Mennonist Society, Berlin. One of the list of marriages reads as follows:

Christian Frey, to Anna Musselman, both of Waterloo. 29 Apr 1845, by banns. Rev. Eby. Wit. Frederick Musselman and Henry Frey.

DeathHe died on 25 March 1902 at Peel Twp., Wellington Co., at age 79.
BurialHe was buried at Elmira Mennonite Cemetery.
NoteChristian and 'Ann' appear in the 1851 census (not done until January of 1852) in Woolwich Township in Waterloo Co. With them are daughter Mary and son Frederick ages 6 and 2. Also with them is an Atline 'Fry', age 12. Her relationship to Christian and Ann is not clear, but it seems unlikely given the year of their marriage that she is their child. Christian is shown as being born in Germany and as a carpenter. He is shown as 28 and Ann as 25. His birth date is taken from the 1901 census at Peel Township in Wellington County.

It would appear that Christian and Anna were enumerated twice in the 1851 census and, while this wasn't a frequent happening, it wasn't unusual. The census was supposed to be a snapshot of the residents of the house at the time the enumerator called. In the case of Christian and Anna, their second enumeration appears to have been in Wellesley Township. There, they are shown as Christian Fry, carpenter, of the Township of Woolwich. This last appears in a column headed, Residence if out of Limits. In this enumeration he is shown as age 30 and she as 25 and her name is shown as Hannah, rather than Ann, or Anna. Considering that in most cases the enumerator wrote what he heard, this isn't likely a significant difference. The children are not shown with them on this second enumerator. Other Frys abound on the page, born in Germany, and of an age where they are more likely siblings of Christian rather than parents. They may have been with a Martin Fry in the Wellesley enumeration, but the page isn't clear on this point.

Death reg. 027302-02 Peel Twp., Wellington Co.
Christian Fry, age 80, died March 25, 1902. There is an obscuring overstamp, but his residence appears to have been concession 1, lot 15. He is shown as a carpenter, a Mennonite and born in Germany.

Christian and Annie are in Peel Township in Wellington County at the time of the 1901 census. There, he is shown as a farmer. Christian and Annie are enumerated immediately following the household of daughter Mary and her husband Jacob Martin.

Christian and Annie are in Wellesley Township in Waterloo County farming at the time of the 1881 census and their later children, except for Anna, are taken from this census. For the present, the list of children is likely incomplete.

Christian and Anna are buried in the Woolwich-Elmira Mennonite Cemetery.
