The City of Cambridge has available online an excellent series of images of funeral cards. This includes a card for Alexander McBean. It tells of his passing at his residence, 'Bracken Braes' on Wednesday, May 1st, at 9:30 A. M. His age on the card is given as 74. The funeral is to be on Friday at 3 P. M. to Mount View Cemetery, Galt. The card is dated North Dumfries May 1st, 1895. A 'perpetual calendar' confirms the days against the dates for May of 1895.

The County of Waterloo Gazetteer and General Business Directory for 1864, James Sutherland, Compiler, Toronto, shows Alex McBean on lot 4 of the 9th concession. Likewise, the Waterloo County Gazetteer and Directory for 1884-85, William Evans, Guelph, shows Alex on the same lot and with the full township lot of 200 acres.

Beyond this, Alex is shown on C9-L4 of North Dumfries and next door to John Milroy Sr. on the 1861 Tremaine's map as it is presented in Andrew Taylor's Our Todays and Yesterdays (this is North Dumfries only). Alex has not been found on the 1842 census of Dumfries Township. Thomas McBean, who may be Alexander's father, is found in both the 1832 and 1842 censuses on C8-L1. By 1861, Angus McBean is present on this property in the Tremaine map.

A note about Alex and Jane's children.

Daughter Jane is not present with her parents as of the 1851 census which was begun in early January of 1852. She is present in the 1861 census and shown as age 10.

The question asked for both censuses, if asked correctly, was: What is your age as of your next birthday.

Son Thomas appears with his parents in the 1851 census (really in January of 1852) and his age as of his next birthday is shown as 1. We cannot be sure that the question was asked or answered correctly. Either way, agewise, young Jane should have been present with her parents in the 1851/52 census. It's a guess, but with Thomas an infant, she may have been staying with other family members to ease things for Jane. That's the best guess.

The McBeans, rather one-off for them in terms of their neighbours, do not appear to have attended First Church in Galt. No baptisms for their children have been found there.

The children who appear with Alex and Jane in the 1861 census in North Dumfries are:
Jane, age 10
Thomas, age 8
Margaret, age 4
John, age 2

By the time of the 1871 census, all the foregoing children are present, plus Alexander, age 9.
