Margaret Dickie
ID # 5436, (1840-1861)
Father | Robert Dickie (1797-1849) |
Mother | Ann Roxburgh (1799-1876) |
Birth | Margaret Dickie was born in 1840 at Ayrshire, Scotland. |
Marriage | She married William Milroy, son of John Milroy and Jane McCarrol, on 9 May 1860 at Waterloo County. MS248 reel 16 Vol 75, page 51 Waterloo County Marriage Register Extracted from a list of marriages solemnized by Archibald Constable Geekie, a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Canada for the year ending 31st day of December, A.D. 1860 William Milroy, 30, residence not given, born Canada. Parents John and Jane Milroy. Margaret Dickie, 19, residence not given, born Scotland. Parents Robert Dickie and Ann Roxburgh. Witnesses Archbld Ferguson and Robert Young, both of Beverly. On May 9th 1860 Arch. C. Geikie, minister, born Scotland, appears in Galt at the time of the 1861 census. Geikie, or Geekie, later went to Australia and spent the rest of his life there. One of his children was named 'Bayne' and while this is not sure, probably, since a past minister had been a Rev. Bayne, Archibald was probably for at least a time at St. Andrew's Church in Galt. |
Death | She died on 13 October 1861 at North Dumfries Township. |
Burial | She was buried at Section 4, Mountview Cemetery, Galt, Canada West. |
Note | Information for Margaret's death is taken from a transcription of her stone in Mountview Cemetery in Galt. She is buried with her parents, Robert Dickie, died March 10, 1849, age 51 years, and his wife Ann Roxburgh, died May 5, 1876, age 76 years. They are all said to be natives of Ayrshire, Scotland. A death notice for Margaret was also published in the October 16, 1861 issue of the Dumfries Reformer. William and Margaret Milroy are present in North Dumfries at the time of the 1861 census taken a few months before Margaret's death. There is no evidence of children. Rosemary Ambrose has extracted death notices from the Dumfries Reformer for the period of 1860-65. In this, she quotes the 16 October, 1861 edition and notes the death of Margaret Milroy, wife of Wm. Milroy, Dumfries, on 13 October, 1861. Margaret is shown as being 21, but, otherwise, no cause of death is provided. Margaret was not originally buried in the Galt Cemetery, or what later became Mountview Cemetery. Margaret's father, Robert Dickie, died in 1849. Bit of a guess, but she was probably buried with him, and, still a guess, in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Both St. Andrews and First Church's cemeteries stopped receiving burials once the Galt cemetery was established in 1868. It was not renamed Mountview until 1886. Margaret's mother died in 1876 and of her husband and daughter were probably arranged at that time. Most First Church burials were reburied in Galt/Mountview; most St. Andrew's burials are said to have been left where they were. All that's left that is visible are the stones that appear in the pergola in St. Andrew's Park. |
